Haliburton's Journey from Rejection to NBA Stardom
Tyrese Haliburton’s path to basketball stardom is marked by a blend of rejection, resilience, and remarkable shooting prowess. As a high school freshman from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Haliburton found himself excused—if not outright cut—from the Playground Warriors AAU team. “They never said that I was cut, but my parents told me that it was essentially like, 'He can come if he wants to,'" Haliburton recalled, a betrayal that left him in tears. "I left in tears because I was so embarrassed of what was going on," he added. This emotional blow led Haliburton to take a risk and join Wisconsin United, a team based in Milwaukee, which necessitated a grueling three-hour round trip from his home in Oshkosh.
Joining Wisconsin United
Under the guidance of coach Bryan Johnikin, Haliburton began to refine his game. Johnikin's coaching methods were unorthodox but effective. During one memorable practice, he had his 3-year-old grandson defend Haliburton to emphasize the low release point of his shot—a technique that may seem amusingly rudimentary but ultimately helped refine Haliburton’s form. The distinctive shot that Haliburton honed starts with the ball positioned in front of his chest and ends with a catapult-like motion that produces significant sidespin. Though unconventional, it is deadly accurate.
Haliburton’s shooting statistics speak for themselves. He has the exceptional distinction of only shooting below 40% from behind the arc once in six seasons across both Iowa State and the NBA. That lone dip came last season when he rushed back prematurely from a hamstring injury.
The Ascension to the NBA
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 185 pounds, Haliburton has become a prominent figure in the NBA, known for his unique shooting style and effectiveness on the court.
