Kiyan Anthony: Young Talent Forging His Own Path
In the world of high school basketball, Kiyan Anthony is rapidly making a name for himself. At 6-foot-5 and as a four-star recruit ranking as the No. 36 prospect in the 2025 class, he's drawing significant attention. Currently attending Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, New York, Kiyan has shown promise both on and off the court.
Kiyan's athletic prowess is evident. Recently, he scored 15 points at the legendary Rucker Park, a testament to his growing skills and potential. However, basketball is only part of his journey.
A Legacy to Uphold
Kiyan’s father, Carmelo Anthony, is no stranger to basketball greatness. Carmelo etched his name in collegiate history by leading Syracuse to the 2003 national championship as a freshman. His contributions to Syracuse University extend beyond his college days, including substantial financial support, leading to the basketball facility being named after him. Despite Carmelo's rich legacy at Syracuse, he has left the decision to follow in his footsteps entirely up to Kiyan.
"[My father] never pushes me to go to Syracuse just because his name is on the gym. He did so much at Syracuse. He knows that I'm my own person. I've just got to make my own decision at the end of the day," Kiyan shared, highlighting his father's understanding and support.
The decision on where to play college basketball is a pivotal one for Kiyan. He has listed Auburn, USC, Florida State, Ohio State, Rutgers, and Syracuse as potential colleges, each offering unique opportunities and challenges.
Pressure and Decision-Making
The pressure on Kiyan is immense, with many expecting him to choose Syracuse. "Even though I know basically the whole world wants me to go to Syracuse, I still haven't made the decision yet and I still have to talk to the coaches some more and really get into detail -- like what other players are coming, how they want me to play, how I'll be coached and stuff like that," Kiyan explained. His thorough approach in evaluating his options demonstrates a maturity beyond his years.
Kiyan also addresses the misconception that his achievements are solely influenced by his father's fame. He emphasizes the crucial role his mother plays in his life. "I would say everybody sees when the cameras are on [my dad] and then they're on me because I'm playing good, but I would say my mom does a lot more background stuff," he said. "Like, when I'm going through something or I need somebody to talk to, my mom is definitely the person."
His mother’s influence extends to his academics and training habits. "And she's the one who really pushes me to get in the gym, even if I don't want to. To go to school and stay on top of my grades and stuff like that," Kiyan added, showcasing a strong support system at home that values education as much as athletics.
A Young Leader
Beyond his impressive skills and family background, Kiyan exhibits leadership qualities. He tries to ensure his friends share in his journey. "My friends maybe not having the same opportunities as I have, I'm the one that's tried to bring them along with me," Kiyan said. "I don't want to make them feel left out." This sense of camaraderie and responsibility highlights his character off the court.
As his college selection process continues, Kiyan plans to rely heavily on his parents' advice. "So I still have to finish up my visits, and then, ultimately, just make a decision. I will rely on my parents a lot with their advice and how they think a school fits me," he noted, indicating a balanced approach to making one of the most significant choices of his young life.
Ultimately, whether he chooses Syracuse or another school, Kiyan's path is his to forge. "If it is Syracuse -- I go there a lot and I practice, I work out there -- if it is that, that's what it is. But he's never going to say, 'You gotta go to Syracuse. You gotta go there because I went there.' He's not going to make me follow in his footsteps unless I really want to,” Kiyan emphasized.
Kiyan Anthony is more than just his father’s son. As he navigates the pressures and opportunities ahead, he continues to show impressive determination, maturity, and independence—qualities that will serve him well, no matter where his journey takes him.
