Chad Kelly Reinstated by CFL, Returns to Argonauts Practice
In a significant development for the Toronto Argonauts, quarterback Chad Kelly made his anticipated return on Sunday following his reinstatement by the Canadian Football League (CFL). Kelly, who had been suspended since May 7 for violating the CFL's gender-based violence policy, was mandated to undergo a series of assessments and counseling as conditions for his comeback.
The suspension stemmed from an independent investigation into a lawsuit filed by a former strength-and-conditioning coach, which accused Kelly of sexual harassment. The Argonauts were also implicated in the lawsuit for wrongful dismissal, which was ultimately settled through mediation in June.
The CFL’s comprehensive assessment process involved confidential evaluations conducted by an independent expert and obligatory counseling sessions with a specialist focusing on gender-based violence. The completion of these requirements was necessary before the CFL would even consider Kelly’s reinstatement.
Following the review of Kelly's psychological assessment with the assistance of experts, and a conversation with CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie, the league confirmed Kelly’s return to the Argonauts. Kelly expressed remorse for his actions, stating, "I am sorry for my actions and the impact it has had on many people personally, the Toronto Argonauts, and the CFL. I recognize that this is just one step in the process of bettering myself, but it is an important one, and I am committed to doing what is needed to be a better teammate, colleague, and person."
Back in Action
Kelly’s return was marked by his participation in Sunday’s practice, where he took approximately 70% of the starting offense snaps. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie noted the positive reception from the team, saying, "It was good to have him back. His teammates were excited to see him back in the building." However, Dinwiddie also expressed caution, indicating that Kelly’s workload would be gradually increased during the week’s practices due to his limited time on the field and absence from training camp.
The Argonauts, currently standing at a 5-4 record, are set to host Saskatchewan on Thursday night. Given Kelly's recent return and limited practice, there is uncertainty regarding his starting role for the upcoming game. There are considerations for Kelly to share snaps with fellow quarterbacks Cameron Dukes and veteran Nick Arbuckle. Reflecting on the situation, Dinwiddie remarked on the necessity of integrating Kelly back into the rhythm of the team’s offense without rushing his return to competitive play.
Kelly had maintained his distance from the team during his suspension and avoided speaking to the media upon his reinstatement, focusing instead on his return to professional duties. His absence has been felt since last season, where he led the Argonauts to a franchise-record 16-2 record, only to face a setback with a 38-17 loss to Montreal in the East Division final.
A Journey of Redemption
Kelly’s football career has had its share of ups and downs, beginning with his stints at Clemson, East Mississippi Community College, and Mississippi during his college years. He was the last pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, selected by the Denver Broncos. However, his tenure with the Broncos was cut short in 2018 following an arrest for criminal trespassing.
Now, with a new chapter unfolding in Toronto, Argonauts General Manager Mike Clemons sees this period as a critical phase of growth for Kelly and the organization as a whole. "This is an important step for Chad, who has taken full accountability for his actions and represents just the beginning of his ongoing commitment to bettering himself and learning from this experience," Clemons said. "There continues to be much work to do to strengthen our team culture, and we are all committed with Chad's return, to work on this together, as a team."
The Argonauts are hopeful that Kelly’s return, coupled with his renewed commitment, will contribute positively to the team's performance and culture. As Kelly continues his journey of redemption, the Argonauts and their supporters will be watching closely, hopeful for both personal and professional growth in the weeks and months ahead.
