The Tennessee Titans' dismal start to the 2024 NFL season has them winless after three games, raising concerns about the team's overall performance and prospects for the year. With a record of 0-3, the Titans are struggling to gain traction, and last week's 30-14 defeat to the Green Bay Packers only compounded their woes.
Quarterback Will Levis' performance has been a focal point of the Titans' early-season struggles. Despite completing 26 of 34 passes for 260 yards and tossing two touchdowns against the Packers, Levis also threw two costly interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Brian Callahan, head coach, remarked on the situation, saying, "Again, I'm not going to overreact to an interception. Those things happen. Guys throw picks. We just can't give it to the other team. We keep giving up points the other way. It's hard to overcome."
The offensive line's inability to protect Levis is another significant issue, as he was sacked eight times in the Green Bay game. This relentless pressure not only disrupts the passing game but also increases the likelihood of turnovers, both of which have plagued the Titans so far this season. Levis leads the NFL in turnovers with three fumbles and five interceptions, placing second in the league for the most interceptions. Callahan highlighted the collective responsibility, stating, "We have to play better around him."
On the defensive side, the Titans have also faced challenges. Against the Packers, they conceded 378 total yards, including a troubling 188 rushing yards. This porous run defense allowed Green Bay to control the game tempo, further complicating any comeback effort by Tennessee. The defensive lapses are part of a broader pattern, as demonstrated in their previous losses: a 24-17 defeat to the Chicago Bears in Week 1 and another 24-17 loss to the New York Jets in Week 2.
Heading into the season, the Titans made some significant moves in their quarterback roster. Mason Rudolph joined the team during the offseason, bringing with him a career record of 8-4-1 as a starter, alongside 19 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Meanwhile, the departure of veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill has left a void. Tannehill is currently navigating free agency in search of a new team.
Callahan expressed frustration and a sense of urgency as the team looks to find its footing. "We've not played a complete game in any phase at any point yet," he admitted. "We're capable of way better than what we've put on the field the last three weeks. No one is coming to save us, so we've got to figure it out."
The Titans are scheduled to face the Miami Dolphins next, who are also struggling with a 1-2 record. This upcoming game presents an opportunity for Tennessee to turn their season around, but it will require a substantial improvement in both their offensive and defensive play. The Titans need to deliver a more cohesive and disciplined performance to break their losing streak and salvage their season before it spirals out of control.
