Los Angeles Kings' Recent Struggles
The Los Angeles Kings have found themselves in a precarious position as they've stumbled through their recent games, losing 12 of their last 14. Despite the skid, they maintain a grip on the fourth spot in the Pacific Division and currently hold the first wild card berth for the playoffs from the Western Conference. This standing comes as a small comfort to a team that has shown significant promise earlier in the season.
With the bulk of their upcoming schedule taking them on the road—seven out of the next eight games—the Kings are at a critical juncture. The performance during this stretch could very well define their season and playoff prospects.
Coaching Tenure and Team Performance
At the helm is head coach Todd McLellan, now in his fifth season with the Kings. McLellan's experience and leadership are under scrutiny as he navigates through these turbulent times. However, he has the backing of General Manager Rob Blake and a contract extension that secures his role through the 2024-25 season. McLellan's self-accountability is evident as he confronts the team's downturn head-on.
"I'm responsible for this. And when you looked at the team that played the first, what would we call it, 25, 30 games if you will, it doesn't look like the team that's playing right now. And I'm responsible for it," McLellan acknowledged, reflecting on the stark contrast between the team's early-season form and their current struggles.
McLellan is actively seeking solutions, experimenting with various strategies to reignite the team's spark. "Our staff is doing what we can or what we believe we can to get them to turn it around. We're trying different things at different times. But I'm going to keep pushing away. I'm going to try and push buttons, poke people, praise people, look at how we do things," he said, signaling his commitment to finding a winning formula.
Despite the recent losses, statistical analysis indicates that the Kings' performance isn't reflective of their potential. "Our numbers—our underlying numbers—say we're more the first-half team than the second-half team, but the winning column doesn't say that, and that's all that matters. So, it's a very fair question," McLellan pointed out, highlighting the discrepancy between the team's analytics and their win-loss record.
Player Perspectives on Team Effort
The players also recognize their role in the team's success. Anze Kopitar, the team's captain, emphasizes the importance of player performance alongside coaching. "I mean, it comes down to this room. They give us a plan, they give us the structure, the motivation or the kick in the [rear end]. It is what it is, but it's about the guys that have to bring it out on the ice and make things happen," Kopitar stated, underscoring the responsibility each player bears in executing on the ice.
Drew Doughty, one of the team's veteran leaders, echoes this sentiment, stressing the need for collective effort and selflessness. "We feel that every single player on this team needs to give 100-percent effort. And you're not going to have your best stuff every night, but if we all give our 100-percent effort, we're a good enough team," Doughty asserted, reinforcing the belief in the roster's depth and capability.
Doughty further elaborated on the team's philosophy, "If we play together, we're going to win games, so you don't need one player to be the best player on the ice every single night. That's not the way we win games. We win games as a team, collectively and playing for the team," he explained, pointing to the importance of unity and teamwork over individual brilliance.
The Kings' recent four-game homestand ended with a lackluster 1-2-1 record, adding to the urgency to recalibrate and refocus. With back-to-back playoff appearances in the past two seasons, the expectation within the organization and among fans is high. The coming weeks will test the Kings' resolve and ability to bounce back, leaning on the experience of their coach, the strategy of their management, and most importantly, the determination and effort of the players.
As the regular season progresses, all eyes will be on the Los Angeles Kings to see if they can overcome their challenges and return to the form that once had them pegged as strong contenders. Their journey continues on the road, where they will have ample opportunity to prove their mettle and reignite their campaign for a successful season.
